New government agency pledges 300,000 new homes a year by 2020

The government has launched a new national housing agency, in a bid to deliver promises in the housing white paper to provide more properties across the country. The new agency—Homes England—will succeed the Homes and Communities Agency. It has been tasked with fixing the housing market by rolling out 300,000 homes a year by mid-2020s.

Homes England will combine existing planning expertise and new land buying powers to secure land in areas that the public want to live, while also supporting ‘smaller and more innovative house builders into the market and resource brownfield sites from across the country’. The agency will ‘develop a new commercial approach to acquiring, preparing, managing and developing land in areas of high demand and strategic importance’. To do this it will ‘focus on using both the land and money to support builders’.
